Pen pals is a column where our friends in the media write us a letter and fill in some blanks. Today’s pen pal is Philip Mak, a freelance fashion writer who can be read regularly on the Huffington Post. He lives in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood with his partner, along with their two cats and 12 plants.
In the beginning I wanted to be a psychologist. But then I realized my style advice is better than my life advice.
If I had to choose between the Real Housewives of New Jersey and The Real Housewives of Atlanta, I’d choose The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills every single time.
My favourite thing about my job is writing. I pinch myself every time I think about how lucky I am to pay my bills doing something I love. When I need to cool down I online shop – it’s better than yoga.
Print is always going to be around, so people need to stop talking like it’s not still in the room. Social media is like family: sometimes it makes me want to die, but who could live without it?
At night I dream about London, Paris… maybe Tokyo. Right now I’m loving matcha powder, to a potentially unhealthy degree.
My favourite yoga position is online shopping.
PR professionals make me look like I go to a lot of really cool parties. I wish they would always read my work before pitching me (and then invite me to really cool parties.)
Before I go, I want you to know I’m actually shorter than I look in the photos.
blue skies,
Philip Mak
