What does a publicist do?
If you are a business owner, author, musician, actor or artist, you probably know how crucial it is to seek publicity. Advertising can be costly, may not do enough or doesn’t work for what you need.
A publicist translates the value and image of your business or your next project into a context and language that is appealing to the media. Essentially they are a connector between you and the press, getting your message to the appropriate media outlets. A publicist has established relationships with key people in the media, and has creative ways of pitching your story to them.
People often think that a certain business, film or project made it into the paper, on television or on the radio because a journalist requested it. This is rarely the case; often a publicist is hired to build buzz about the person or the product.
Why can’t I be my own publicist?
If you are comfortable making hundreds of phone calls, have a large database of media contacts and have no problem ‘tooting your own horn’, then you could be your own publicist. However, what people do not realize is that a publicist does their job daily. They are well versed in PR writing and pitching. Most business owners and artists are busy running their businesses and it doesn’t make sense for them to try to get through to the press. They neither have the time nor the savvy to get their message out.
Is my company, project or event too big or too small to hire a PR firm?
To ClutchPR the small start-up company and the short film at the Festival are just as important as the large established international organization. No business or project is too small or big—all of them can benefit from the hard work of a good publicist.
