The Royal Cinema announces December schedule jammed with quirky holiday fun
Inaugural #MUFFSociety event to screen Spice World
December 1, 2014, TORONTO – True to a continued commitment to creating memorable screening experiences for audiences, Toronto’s art deco theatre The Royal Cinema (608 College St) presents a diverse, exciting lineup for December including holiday favourites, first run titles and many notable films. December is set to include the inaugural #MUFFSociety (Monthly Underground Female Film Society) event, a monthly series celebrating everything and anything girltastic. This month’s #MUFFSociety features drinks, costume contests, photo booths and Spice World.
December also sees the first run engagements of Cold in July, a crime thriller directed by Jim Mickle (Stakeland, We Are What We Are) and starring Michael C. Hall (“Dexter”) and Bad Turn Worse, which premiered at TIFF 2013 and stars Mark Pelligrino (The Big Lebowski).
Not one to miss the opportunity for a themed screening series, The Royal’s Xmas Xtravaganza! Takes place from December 16 – 20, 2014 and features the 40th anniversary screening of the Canadian cult classic Black Christmas with cast present and the unveiling of a new poster for the film by acclaimed artist “Ghoulish” Gary Pullin. Other films in the series include Warren P. Sonoda’s Cooper’s Christmas, Trading Places, Scrooged!, Gremlins, a Christmas themed mystery movie, the return of LASERBLAST Video Club with the Christmas action film Riotand a special screening of the Nelvana animated film A Cosmic Christmas presented by Kid Power!
Second run films screening at The Royal include David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, the incredible Keanu Reeves action movie John Wick, Bill Murray heart warmer St. Vincent, critically acclaimed Whiplash, Gone Girl and matinees of family friendly stop motion film Boxtrolls.
In addition to the special one time screening of Spice World, The Royal is also presenting Life After Death From Above 1979, the documentary about Canadian dance-punk band Death From Above 1979, The Shortest Day, a celebration of short films with two free programmes of kid and family themed films and the Toronto premiere of The Search for Weng Weng, a documentary about the forgotten Filipino actor who played the diminutive super spy in the outrageous send-up, For Your Height Only, with director Andrew Leavold in attendance.
