Going out with friends is never easy when you have Celiac disease, an auto-immune disorder that prevents your body from processing gluten. With more people being properly diagnosed, more and more restaurants are adding gluten-free items to their menus. Too bad those options are generally salad, or horribly tasteless creations that resemble saw dust covered in condiments. No thank you.
Well, luckily for you, here’s our top picks for eating gluten-free in the city without having to compromise taste (or price!) –
- Bunner’s – If you’re constantly on the go, you probably don’t give yourself time for breakfast. Your gluten-eating compadres can pick up a muffin or bagel, but us GF folks aren’t so lucky. With two locations to serve your GF baked good needs, we suggest making one visit a week and grabbing your morning muffins or cookies for the week so you have them ready to snap up on the way out the door. Recommendation: the Supersonic Cookie ($2.50 ea.) – We buy a dozen at a time and often take two to munch on during the transit into work.

2. Kupfert and Kim – With their affordable pricing and their above and beyond customer service, it’s a lunch hotspot for those who are gluten-free and those who just want to eat well. The food is so delicious and their entire menu is gluten-free, you can’t go wrong! With multiple locations across the 6ix, you don’t have to worry about getting good GF grub wherever you are. Recommendation: the Oaxaca Bowl ($11). Get it to go, or sit in and enjoy the atmosphere.

3. Cardinal Rule – This place goes out of their way to make most of their meals GF friendly. A hot spot featured on Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here, the food is just as amazing as the décor. The wait staff and the cooks alike are friendly, funny and don’t give you a hard time if you ask for something to be gluten-free. We have taken many of our gluten-enthusiast friends to Cardinal Rule who often end up eyeing our gluten-free meal over theirs. Recommendation: the Classic Breakfast ($11) and the Cardinal Club ($12). Get a side of the Deep Fried Pickles ($7). Trust, they are life changing!
