Food for the soul
It’s May 1 and Spring is in the air, right? Wrong. Toronto’s rough Winter is bringing us an equally spirit dampening Spring. All the more reason to talk about some of our favourite comfort foods.
Naturally, our first choice is soup. But not wimpy, unsatisfying, light stuff. We’re talking hearty, filling soup that warms you right through. The Soup Nutsy ( 200 Wellington St W) offers soups so hearty they’re essentially liquid meals. And yes, the service may be as brisk as the name suggests (though it makes us love it all the more). Try something spicy like the Cajun Chicken Gumbo.
Next up, ramen. We know it’s a variation of soup but nothing makes us happier than slurping up a storm with some Japanese noodles in delicious, piping hot broth. Our fav? Ajisen Ramen. (various locations) Traditional, delicious, ‘nuff said.
We’re going old school with this one. Shepherd’s Pie. Need we say more? Try it at The Monk’s Table (1276 Yonge,) or The Dog & Bear (1100 Queen Street W).
Finally, we come to pasta. Maybe it’s our inner Mediterranean food lover, but few things in life are more reassuring than a big bowl of pasta. If you want to go traditional, try Enoteca Sociale’s hand made pastas and Roman recipes. Looking for something more inventive? The Beverley Hotel’s (335 Queen St W) Carbon-Nero is damn intriuging.
Hopefully these choices get your mind off the weather and onto your gut. It looks like the dampness is here for the long haul, so if you’ve got more comfort food ideas, let us know.
